Marion Robert Morrison (May 26, 1907 – June 11, 1979) was born in Winterset, Iowa. Wayne moved from childhood to Palmdale, California, and then to Glendale. Wayne began working for small local movie companies while in high school. He also played football in high school and was a member of the Glendale school team. After being recruited by the University of Southern California, Wayne started his film career in the 1920s. He was an extra in John Ford’s Four Sons in 1928. He had his first significant role in The Big Trail in 1930. Wayne was nominated for the Academy Award for Sands of Iwo Jima. Ethan Edwards, a desperate man searching for his niece, kidnapped and killed by Comanche, was one of his most significant roles. It was part of the 1956 western film The Searchers. In the 1960s, Wayne was diagnosed with lung cancer. He was able to have his lung removed and was fully recovered. But later he succumbed to stomach cancer.
