Yogi Berra was born on May 12, 1925, in St. Louis, Egypt, to Pietro and Paolina Berra, Italian immigrants who settled in the United States. His father was a laborer in a brick yard. His siblings include Mike, Tony, John, and Josie. Baseball player Lawrence Peter Barra better known as “Yogi”, Berra was a three-time winner of the American League Most Valuable Player award, ten World Championships and 15-time All-Star victories to his credit. The player earned the nickname “Yogi” when his childhood friend, Bobby Hoffman, identified Berra with an Indian snake-cheeker (Yogi) who used to squat with crossed legs after losing a game. He was the first man to win a pass in various leagues in his 40-year baseball career. His style of leaving a finger on the outside of his glove was later imitated by other catchers.
