Maya Angelou (Marguerite Annie Johnson) was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 4, 1928, the second child of Bailey Johnson, a doorman, and Navy dietitian. She joined Georgia in 1972, shortly after writing about an interracial romance in 1975, but made her official directorial debut in 70 with Down in the Delta (1998).
